If you are interested in deepening your understanding of the power and pedagogy of teaching through discussion, I recommend Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon’s new book, Learning to Teach through Discussion: the Art of Turning the Soul (Yale University Press, 2009). The book presents a case study of two beginning fourth grader teachers learning to become more skillful leaders of interpretive discussions. You can concentrate on the chapters that deal with learning to prepare for and lead discussions, and decide how interested you are in the philosophical, literary and psychological foundations of interpretive discussion.
